`as to'. Why do we need this? You can always use `on', `of' or `about'.

Even Michael Howard is doing it. As for graduate students writing papers, there seems to be about one `as to' per line...

Agreed; though there are many pretentious stylistic quirks I find even more annoying, probably topped by "at this moment in time".

A good rule of thumb these days is to read a few Nigerian spams, then write something completely different.
